Multan is a major cultural and economic center of southern Punjab in Pakistan.  It is built on a mound east of the Chenab River.  It is known as the City of Saints because of its rich Sufi history.  There are many shrines in Multan with beautiful architecture and paintings dating back to the 11th century and ancient cites that date back to 3000BCE during the Indus Valley Civilization.  The Multan Sun Temple, where people from the era used to worship the sun, stands preserved to this day.

The major languages spoken in this area are Saraiki and Punjabi.

The city is known for its ceramics and camel-skin work. Industries include: cotton, wool and silk textile mills; fertilizer, soap and glass factories; and flour, sugar and oil mills. Much of the crops and textiles are exported throughout the world.
